Help give children the best start in life
Volunteering With Home-Start West Lothian
Volunteering doesn’t just change lives — it changes yours too. Gain confidence, learn new skills, share your experience and make real connections while giving back to your community.
Volunteering with Home-Start West Lothian is about giving children the best possible start in life. By supporting families, you are helping create a safer, calmer and more nurturing home where a child can grow, learn and thrive. When parents feel less overwhelmed and more supported, children feel it too.
Our volunteers build simple, trusting relationships with families who may be struggling with isolation, stress or confidence. You might spend time playing with a child, encouraging early learning, or helping a parent feel more able to cope day to day. These small, consistent moments help children develop confidence, social skills and a sense of security that can shape their future.
You don’t need special qualifications — just time, kindness and the willingness to be there. In return, you see the difference for yourself: a child coming out of their shell, a parent feeling more confident, a family finding its feet again. It’s a simple way to make a lasting difference in a child’s life.
We are with you all the way
We offer all our volunteers an initial training and assessment course which consists of short online E-learning modules you can complete in your own time before the face to face sessions of which there are 4 which happen across four weeks, around 2.5 hours per session.
The face to face sessions are held at our Home-Start office and fully compliment the E-learning modules, offering discussion on each topic with fellow volunteers.
The course covers subjects such as
- Listening skills
- Values and attributes
- Confidentiality
- Domestic Abuse
- Child protection
All volunteers join the PVG scheme through Volunteer Scotland; this is mandatory.
Training and assessment opportunities are offered to all volunteers on a regular basis and full support is provided by coordinators throughout the volunteer journey.
