Developing your skills with Home-Start!
Volunteering With Home-Start West Lothian
Our Volunteers all go through a 7-week training course (1 day a week for 3 hours). The Course covers subjects such as Listening Skills, Values & Attitudes, Confidentiality, Domestic Abuse and Child Protection. The Course is accredited through West Lothian College and offers 5 credits at SCQF Level 5. It is an intensive course as well as innovative, interactive and lots of fun! The Course allows us to get to know our Volunteers very well so that we can then match them to a family appropriately. All Volunteers join the PVG scheme through Volunteer Scotland; this is a mandatory.
We also offer on-going training to our Volunteers. This is to enhance the Volunteers’ knowledge and understanding of the issues our families are struggling with on a daily basis.
We offer a ‘Volunteer Training Calendar’ throughout the year and we work in partnership with various agencies to provide training/raising awareness, such as – Health Improvement Team, Police Scotland Sure Start, West Lothian Council, West Lothian Drug & Alcohol Service, Book Bugs, CAB West Lothian to name but a few. We also provide annual in-house refresher ‘Child Protection’ training to all Volunteers to ensure that they are kept up to date with changes in legislation.
We also celebrate together at our annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony!

Lyndsay, Volunteer at Home-start West Lothian
Lyndsay was supported by Home-Start West Lothian before she became a volunteer herself. Like 1 in 9 Home-Start volunteers across the UK who have previously received support from Home-Start, she knew the difference that having volunteer support had made to her family.
