Why do we view mental health and physical health so differently
Group Worker Emily talks about how we need to look after ourselves.
We all have physical health. We all know to follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly and lay off the bad stuff. We know that we’ll only ever have one body and we need to look after it, treat it with kindness and care. It doesn’t matter that some days we’re absolutely nailing it and other days you realised you’ve accidentally eaten a sharing size dairy milk. That’s ok, it’s all about balance, right?
Why don’t we think this way about our mental health?
Why are we so hard on ourselves and forget that life is about balance and our mental health travels in ups and downs, much like that family size dairy milk!
If you’ve come to our groups you’ll have heard us talk about our bodies and minds being like a car, you need to fuel it well, move it regularly and keep good maintenance on it so that it runs in tip top condition.
That maintenance is the hard bit – it’s the bit the HSWL Team rabbit on about like mindfulness, relaxation and wellbeing tools. There’s a reason for that… it’s because it works. If you’re looking after your body; it works better. If you look after your mind; it works better and you’ll have more ups than downs.
We’d like to encourage you to use the wellbeing tools on our website, get outside in the sunshine and generally do things that make you happy.
We want to remind you all to look after yourself, don’t be hard on yourself and most importantly if you’re down the only way is up… it will get better.
